Profile


The Department of Geography of Goalpara College, established in the year 1965, under the able and visionary leadership of the then principal of the college, Dr. Mahendra Borah. The department is one of the oldest departments under Gauhati University. It was 11th August 1965 Prof. Abedur Rahman Saikia, have joined as founder Head of the Department of Geography. Prior to 1965 Commercial Geography was taught in Goalpara College. The introduction of Geography at College opened new vistas for the students of the region. Under the able guidance and hardwork of Prof. Abedur Rahman Saikia, the department continue to flourish from a humble beginning with one year Pre-University level to reach the present status because of untiring effort of the faculty members as well as the college authority. Mr. Siva Prasad Deka, have joined as demonstrator on 27/12/1975 and in the year 1979 / 1979), Geography was introduced at degree level as pass course subject. Prof. Amiyo Kr. Boro and Prof. Jyotish Das have joined in this department as lecturer in 1983 and 1984 respectively. In the year 1987, Major Course in Geography was introduced in degree level. The department not only caters the need of the students of Goalpara district but also students from other states viz. West Bengal and Meghalaya are get admitted in the department. Enrolment of students is done strictly on merit basis. The first batch students in Geography Major course were appeared final examination in 1990. The department have achieving excellent performance of students in the results every year. Sri Wazed Ali a student of second batch students in major course have secured 1st class 1st position among the students of science stream under Gauhati university. In the year 2005 Miss Anamika Medhi has secured Best Graduate in Arts under Gauhati University.
The department has its own Departmental Seminar Library with more than 700 text and reference books besides a good number of journals. It has a G.I.S. laboratory where certificate course on G.I.S. application organised besides the regular curriculum teaching on G.I.S. The department has been organising series of special lecture for the students every year. A workshop on ‘Biodiversity Conservation’ was organised on 10th February, 2009 as a part of National Environment Awareness Campaign (NEAC) sponsored by Ministry of Environment Forest and Climate Change, Govt. of India. A five days residential workshop on ‘Map Learning’ for the school and college students was organised during 25th August to 29th August, 2009 in collaboration with SSEAP, Nagaon and ASTEC, Guwahati. The department has hosted 18th Annual Conference of North East India Geographical Society (NEIGS) in the Goalpara College premises on 27th to 29th January, 1995. A scientific lecture on ‘Geographical Information System (GIS) and its application’ was organised on 18th April, 2015. On 16th February, 2015 Japanese scholar Mr. Kiguchi Masashi from University of Tokyo has visited the department and delivered a lecture. The 28th Biennial Conference of North East India Geographical Society (NEIGS) and Golden Jubilee Celebration of Geography Department of Goalpara College was organised on 24th to 25th January, 2016. On 16th March, 2016, Dr. H. H. Asada of Kyoto University has visited the department and delivered a lecture. Prof. Suren Talukder, has delivered a popular talk on ‘Importance of Map Projection’ on 15th November, 2016. A one day workshop on ‘Disaster Risk Reduction and Rainfall Pattern’ was organised on 5th March, 2018, where Dr. Yusuke Yamane of Tokoha University, Japan and Dr. Hideyuki Kamimera of NIED, Japan was grace the occasion as key speaker. The department has published the 13th edition of ‘Bhougolika’, (December, 2003) a popular geographical magazine in Assamese on behalf of North East India Geographical Society (NEIGS).
