Institute of Distance and Open learning (IDOL) was established in May, 1998 with the objective to ensure the opportunity to pursue quality higher education to large number of students who could not pursue higher education through conventional mode of education. It accommodates the students who cannot enroll in the conversional system of higher education due to various factors like limited number of seats in the Post Graduate Classes, livelihood compulsion etc. and aim to impact quality education in an intellectually challenging learning environment. IDOL now runs 29 programmes with an enrollment of over forty thousand students. IDOL Offers Post Graduate Courses in a number of subjects like Assamese, English, Economics, History, Political Science, mathematics, Commerce, Bengali, M.Sc. (IT), MCA, Education, Philosophy, Bodo, Nepali, Mass Communication and Journalism (MCJ), PG Diploma in Sales and Marketing Management (PGDSMM), PG Diploma in Human Resource Management (PGDHRM) etc.

Goalpara College is one of the study and examination centre presently with about three hundred students enrolled in Post Graduate Courses. The admission process starts during the month of June and July every year. All the examinations are conducted as per rules and regulations of Gauhati University by the Controller of Examinations, G.U. Examinations are held during the month of July and January of every year.
