Profile


Physics department of Goalpara College was established in the year 1966 with Dr. Kamaleswar Goswami, a renown nuclear physicist, as the founder head of the department. It is one of the oldest science departments in the entire district that has been playing major role for growth and expansion of science education as a whole and physics education in particular in this part of the state as well as in the adjoining state like Meghalaya. Honours course in the subject was introduced in 1985. A number of distinguished alumni from this department are working in different Universities, IITs, IISER’s and other important institutions of the country as well as of abroad. The department has also produced a large number of college and school teachers, who have made enormous contribution in the field of Physics education, and have given the department an added respectability. Excluding one vacant post of Assistant Professor, at present the teaching staff of the department comprises of Dr. Ranjit Choudhury, Associate Professor and head, Dr. Manjit Borah, Assistant Professor, Dr. Yoshiko Bailung, Assistant Professor and Dr. Bijay Kumar Sah, Assistant Professor. Besides rendering serious effort on teaching, the department also participates in research activities in the field of Material Science, Nano-Physics, Theoretical High Energy Physics, Plasma Physics and Bio-Physics. The department has also extension activities like science popularisation programme, awareness campaign against superstitions etc, which it provides through departmental unit of organisations like Assam Physical Society, Physics association of North-East, Assam Science Society and Indian Association of Physics Teachers (IAPT). Besides conducting IAPT scholarship examination, the department also regularly organise seminars to give students the opportunity to interact with greater world of Physics.
