PROFILE

Goalpara College came into existence on August 8, 1955. English, being a compulsory core subject also shared the time of the inception of the college. Since that memorable day of establishment, the departtment has been playing a pivotal role in shaping the future of a vast majority of young aspirants in this little part of the earth. Mr Subhash Chatterjee was the first teacher of this department and served the institution till Mr Amal Chandra Roy joined as the Principal of this college along with the additional responsibility of this department in 1960. Subsequently, when the institution was still in its infancy, Dr Mahendra Bora, a very popular and renowned literary figure became its Principal. Brought up on the English literature, Dr Bora helped and guided this department so as to hold its head high. His is one of the most revered names in Assamese literature. Mr A V Ramaiyya joined the department as its head in 1959 and served the department for pretty long period till he retired in 1987 and was replaced by Mr S V Appaiyya who had joined the department in 1963. For a very brief period this department had the privilege of enjoying the teaching services of Mrs Nirupama Borgohain, a renowned litterateur of Assamese language. During the 80s two eminent educationists namely Mrs Kalpana Nath and Mrs Manjushree Baruah also served this department as teachers. Mr Appayya retired in 1995. Mr D J Abedin who had joined this department in 1970 became its head in 1995. In the same year the department introduced Major course (Honours) in English.
Later Mr K M Sarma who had joined this department in 1987 became the Head in 2003. Mr Sarma retired in 2006. Jakirul Islam Mazumdar had served this department for a brief period. While in service he unfortunately died in a car accident and the department lost a very young and versatile talent in the form of his premature death. Dr. Priyanka Kakoti had served this department for six years till she resigned and joined D C B College Jorhat. All of them served this department to the best of their ability. The alumni often remember them with respect and tears in their eyes.

Such distinguished scholars adorned the faculty of English at different times. Presently the department has five full time teachers. Considering the teacher-student ratio and the workload, the existing number is inadequate. All the teachers of the department are sincerely engaged mainly in teaching-learning process and research activities.

The department has so far had a large number of quite successful alumni who have been employed as administrative officers, lawyers, bankers, college and school teachers etc.

Student Profile - Entry Level Competencies, Socio-economic Status, Language Proficiency etc.
Students are enrolled on the basis of their higher secondary result. Students largely come from rural areas with poor and average socio-economic background. Students are mostly proficient in Assamese and the dialects of the linguistic communities they belong to. Their knowledge of English is mostly poor so far as their communicative abilities are concerned. However, most of them are good at writing.

Changes made in the courses or programmes during the past two years and the contribution of the faculty to those changes.

The college is affiliated to Gauhati University, Guwahati. Hence, the college has no role to play in the mechanism of changes in courses or programmes. In the recent past the University syllabi were modified to make them more relevant and updated in 2019 20 by introducing the CBCS system. The department is preparing itself to adopt NEP with effect from 2023-24 academic session.

Modern teaching methods practiced and use of ICT in teaching – learning

Lecture method is normally followed. LCD Projectors and computers are occasionally used for teaching of phonetics or showing videos. Apart from this procedure, tutorial classes and home assignments are also arranged by the faculty.
To make the teaching-learning process effective experiential and participative learning methods are always given priority. GD, Buzz sessions, role play, flip class are such methods used by our faculty members.
Teachers are available beyond class hours for interaction with students. Language Lab is also available in the department. WhatsApp groups for each batch. Google classrooms are used by teachers. PPT, Recorded lectures, videos on relevant topics are shared by using these ICT tools.

Participation of teachers in academic and personal counselling of students

Apart from the classroom teaching the teachers schedule separate appointments with the students with difficulties for discussing their study related problems. In addition the teachers of the department provide personal guidance to the students. All teachers participate in the mentor-mentee exercise.

After final exams bright students are encouraged to pursue higher education and mediocre ones are advised to add professional degree/ diploma to their educational qualifications to get a job of their choice. Sessions on career counselling for the students of language studies and humanities are organized time to time by inviting resource persons from outside.
