Background

Way back in 1966, the Founder HoD, Professor Kula Bhusan Das had set up the Botany Department with his blood and sweat, almost as a one man army. In the initial years, he was the only faculty member and he continues to inspire us with his dedicated contributions, as well as his life of trials and tribulations. An upright man with strong beliefs and principles, he was much loved and respected by his students, faculty members, and the community at large during his tenure at Goalpara College.

Professor Das comes from a very humble origin. Born in 1936 in a farmer’s family in a tiny, nondescript village in Chapar (a small town in Dhubri District), his early years were tough, full of struggles and sacrifices. He lost his father quite early during the second year of his graduation, leading to severe resource constraints. Son of the soil and a self-made man, he worked as a teacher on and off to not only fund his own education but also bear the responsibilities of a large family of six younger brothers and sisters. He finished ISC from St. Anthony’s College, Shillong, B.Sc. from Cotton College, and M.Sc. from Gauhati University, before joining Goalpara College in 1966.
